@matthew @manuel.pais what are the kind of job titles that you’ve typically seen on a platform team?
What I've seen tends to be pretty flat (not much job specialization): platform engineers, product owner (not often enough!), and tech lead
thanks! since you said not often enough, what are the advantages of having a product owner on a platform team?
I gave a (biased because i am a product manager/owner) talk about why devops/platform teams should have a product manager involved: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Jh1IjuWzMc. there are other better talks out there covering this on the ITRev youtube channel
well, we should be treating the platform as a product so they def need product development skills
doesn't have to be a product owner, ideally the whole team is empowered to make product decisions, but often that awareness is missing in very technical teams so having a product owner in the early stages can be a good start
good deal, thank again, sir. I thought you were going to say something along those lines about product owner but I wanted to hear your response without poisoning the well :)
So as Manuel says, the job titles should largely match the job titles outside a platform: * UX designer * Software engineer * Product manager * Test engineer * Data engineer * Designer * Deployment engineer Etc. It's all (or mostly) software now, so most teams and people should be arranged to adopt "digital" (software) approaches. At s minimum, all config is in version control.
I found this presentation by Cornelia Davis very informative. It also lined up with what you were saying Matthew. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpuJSpp3hhA
