anyone here from a smaller but growing company have experience with running devops dojos at their company? would you be willing to share what approaches you’ve taken, what’s worked and what hasn’t, etc?
@UN58R7G82 I lead the Dojo for Walmart and work closely with other companies who have or want to start dojos. I can speak to scaling pretty well and most sizes. How big?
Total company size is 100 but our devops department is 25. In Team Topologies speak, we have 3 stream teams and a platform team.
In that situation I'd recommend IDing a couple of people who understand CD and that CD is about 10% tooling and have them help the teams solve problems. We've some tips on how to do that and the issues most teams are facing.
Yeah, I’d love to hear more. What you suggested is along the lines of what I was thinking. I’m not sure the best way to go about doing it, though - like is an hour per day with the team enough? Or is it better to say, take two weeks and embed the CD expert in the team? Guess it’s pretty contextual, but I figured I’d try to find someone smarter than me and see what they had to say 😄
Not smarter, I've just failed at this previously. We take a few tacks depending on the needs of the team and it will also depend on your goals. Our goal is to help every team understand whats required to deliver to production daily and help them solve that problem. Sometimes that means a 6-8 week pairing with the team. Sometimes that means an hour or two of talking. If your goal is rapid acceleration to CD, the 6-8 week route is the fastest. If you want to set up some time, we can talk about your situation and I may have some suggestions to help.
